Post 4: Reflecting on the environmental geography of your meal or product

Blog Post 4

My Meal product of chicken and canned cream of chicken soup have a negative environmental impact, but also there are positive impacts and solutions. To start off with the chicken, locally the chickens cause negative impacts because of where poultry is usually produced. Poultry industry is a cause of environmental degradation. Globally it can kill other wildlife because of the filth and disease that comes with the production of chickens. It can affect the groundwater and grass. Also, the major production also requires a huge amount of shipping of trucks and gas emissions. Locally something that can be done is have more animal control, and that goes for globally as well.  Wisconsin local workers can make more money rather than large productions, therefore less shipping and less gas and trucks. Organic breeding of chickens, less pesticides and larger ranges for the chickens which will help with the bacteria and filth that will go into the ground water. Individually and in the household, I believe we can buy more organic and less processed chicken, support local farmers on a small scale. My other meal product was a canned good of cream of chicken condensed soup. Canned food is globally becoming less of an issue than it was 30 years ago. Producing these cans on a global scale causes major CO2 emissions that can be avoided. A global, local solution to cans is recycling because recycling cans can save energy. Locally or in the household we can purchase more fresh items in the super markets and make these meals from scratch in the household. The mass production of Campbell’s soup also is a global issue with the transportation and gas emissions, along with the making of these cans. If we can figure out a different way to can food with possibly less emissions that would help out the environment a lot. Overall, recycling is the best thing for everyone to do in the home and everywhere else.

One of my items is boneless chicken breast from the Roundy’s production in Kenosha Wisconsin. These items get sold to supermarket chains with 166 stores of Wisconsin and Illinois. What I buy is the fresh and never frozen chicken breast. The second item I am going to write about is Campbell cream of chicken condensed soup. Campbell Soup Company is a global food company headquartered in Camden NJ. The chicken I had round some research on what exactly is this chicken and where it had come from. The Jedwabnick runs Roundy’s commissary, which is a 122,000 square foot kitchen. This product is not shipped too far, even though according to environmental working group, chicken is not the lowest but one of the lessor impacting on carbon emissions. It says comparing to carbon footprint of car miles driven per 4 0z, it equals to only 3 (EWG, 2017). On the other hand it is not frozen therefore needs to be fresh and takes less time and delivery for it to get to the store.  Different types of meat vary on the quantity of chemical fertilizers, fuel and other production inputs used, differences in soil conditions and production systems. For where the bird comes from, these breeds are raised to grow fast and tender. Most of these chickens are 13 weeks old or younger at the time of slaughter. Most of these distributions do use antibiotics, which are risks for human health. Not environmentally though. The environmental impact though, compared to other meats, chicken production generates the lowest amount of greenhouse gases.  As pick n save says on their website, this chicken is 98% fat free, trimmed and has no added hormones or steroids, contains no added ingredients (Roundys House brands made at Kenosha, 2007). As some chicken from the stores do, the one I had chosen and usually eat is on the healthier side.
To start with the canned product, there is veg oil in this. Canola and corn oil are made from genetically modified corn and canola. These are hazardous to our health as they are processed and cleaned with chemicals. They are heated to high temperatures and this heat oxidizes the oils which frees radicals and dangerous for our health. Another toxic chemical would be MSG. (There is modified food starch, wheat flour, salt, cream, whey, MSG, soy protein concentrate yeast extract, flavoring and dehydrated garlic.) The can itself has BPA (biphenyl) which has health and environmental conditions. BPA is readily and inherently biodegradable in water, meaning that is breaks down rapidly and does not persist in the environment (Understanding Labels, n.d.).  A research I had found about BPA says that “in streams and rivers globally, typical concentrations are less than 1 microgram per liter. “Therefore, studies have shown BPA has low potential for bioaccumulation, and does not have many environment risks. The production of this can and food had been delivered through trucks and therefore can contribute to carbon emissions. I do buy my products at the supermarket, and this therefore will travel farthest to get to me, my chicken breast is more local than the Campbell’s soup. This is a global company and therefore these ingredients and production will affect the world on a global matter. As though recycling these cans will help overall in the long run.

This map gives a good explanation on where Campbell soup all distributes itself across the Us, and some in Mexico and Eaurople
The numbers indicate how many manufactures are located in that state.

My consumer item of my specific meal

My consumer item was a specific meal I had for meal prepping for the entire week,  it was chicken, brown rice, cream of chicken 99% fat free soup, lemon, green beans, carrots and corn. Most of the ingredients for the sauce contained chicken stock, vegetable oil, milk, starch, wheat and flour. The chicken breast were frozen chicken from Aldi's that had some rib meat in it. The corn was canned corn, along with the beans and carrot came in a frozen package. The chicken was from Aldis and brand is named Kirkland boneless skinless chicken breast, with seasonings such as garlic, onion, pepper and kosher salt.

1) A local impact on the plastic bag would be the amount of animals getting sick or dying from trying to eat ingest these bags and get toxins into their system. I find this interesting because on a daily basis I see plastic bags everywhere in Milwaukee and these animals trying to get the left over garbage around the city. Parts of plastic (since it does not break down easily)get into these animals digestive system and get sick or die.

2) A way in the video for people to manage plastic bags were trying to put bans on the plastic bag, cut down on the consumption of bags or overall using bags that were not plastic. these things were attempting to manage the consumption of plastic bags. The psychologist that was asking people the reason on why they used plastic bags gave people a more reason to look at the overall effect and long term effect of using them.

3) I think we are coming to a point where we are aware and smart enough to create something that is way less harmful to the planet. Some ways that i know how locally we are dealing with plastic bag issues is using "Greener" bags, such as biodegradable bags so we can get rid of that garbage without a release of a bunch of toxins and extra waste. To me it is definitely a global issue, some places might band the plastic bag but once they bags get into the ocean lets say, it can travel anywhere at that point and harm the planet and fish in locations that dont even have plastic bags anymore. Globally it should be a consideration for the environments sake. Globally though, some countries may not think of it as such a big issue that needs to be fixed so therefore, that can create a conflict. I do not think plastic bags are misunderstood, I agree that it provides many people with jobs and business grows instead of declines, but I think they're are certain ways to work around it such as creating a bag that is still cheap and people can keep their jobs, but in a safer environmental way.
