Post 4: Reflecting on the environmental geography of your meal or product

Blog Post 4

My Meal product of chicken and canned cream of chicken soup have a negative environmental impact, but also there are positive impacts and solutions. To start off with the chicken, locally the chickens cause negative impacts because of where poultry is usually produced. Poultry industry is a cause of environmental degradation. Globally it can kill other wildlife because of the filth and disease that comes with the production of chickens. It can affect the groundwater and grass. Also, the major production also requires a huge amount of shipping of trucks and gas emissions. Locally something that can be done is have more animal control, and that goes for globally as well.  Wisconsin local workers can make more money rather than large productions, therefore less shipping and less gas and trucks. Organic breeding of chickens, less pesticides and larger ranges for the chickens which will help with the bacteria and filth that will go into the ground water. Individually and in the household, I believe we can buy more organic and less processed chicken, support local farmers on a small scale. My other meal product was a canned good of cream of chicken condensed soup. Canned food is globally becoming less of an issue than it was 30 years ago. Producing these cans on a global scale causes major CO2 emissions that can be avoided. A global, local solution to cans is recycling because recycling cans can save energy. Locally or in the household we can purchase more fresh items in the super markets and make these meals from scratch in the household. The mass production of Campbell’s soup also is a global issue with the transportation and gas emissions, along with the making of these cans. If we can figure out a different way to can food with possibly less emissions that would help out the environment a lot. Overall, recycling is the best thing for everyone to do in the home and everywhere else.
